Taro Miyake departed Japan for London in 1904 after reputedly being fired from his job following a brawl.

Miyake toured the music halls where he defeated the 'reigning champion' in the jujutsu style, Yukio Tani. Miyake and Tani then joined forces, opening a jujutsu school and co-authoring a book titled "The Game of Ju-Jitsu" (1906).

In 1908 he started touring Europe with Sadakazu Uyenishi and Mitsuyo Maeda and then went on to the United States (1914) and ended up settling in Seattle. Miyake remained in the US for the remainder of his life apart from a brief sojourn to Japan; he died in 1935.

This video is said to have been taken in Paris (1912) - the demonstration is performed by Takisaburo Tobari (tori) and Taro Miyake (uke)

...perhaps the greatest influence on early British Ju Jutsu and definitely the father of British Judo was Gunji Koizumi, aka GK or little spring, who first arrived these shores in 1906.

Koizumi is reputed to have taught at the Kara Ashikaga School of Jujitsu in Liverpool before traveling to London where he collaborated with Sadakazu Uyenishi. In 1907 he traveled to America to train as an engineer.

In 1912 he returned to Britain and in 1918 established the Budokwai to offer tuition in jujitsu, kendo, etc.

Whilst receiving a visit from Jigaro Kano in 1920, Koizumi and Tani agreed to adopt Kano's system of Judo.

Koizumi continued to live, practice and teach Judo in Britain, he helped establish the British Judo Association in 1948 and wrote several books on Judo before apparently committing suicide in 1965.

...introducing Yukio Tani - sadly I can find no confirmed video footage but instead present this caricature by George Cooke (photo courtesy of the Victoria & Albert Museum).

Tani was a diminutive Judo, or Ju-Jutsu, expert, who was 5 foot 1 inch tall and weighed 9 stones. Born in 1881, he arrived in London in 1900. The following year he founded the British Society for Jiu-Jitsu with William Bankier (also drawn by Cooke), the strongman Apollo, who promoted Tani’s tours.

In 1901 Tani demonstrated his skills at the Japan Society and in 1904 opened the Japanese School of Jiu-Jitsu at 305 Oxford Street, London.

By 1903 he was in demand at music halls, when rewards were offered to anyone who could defeat him. In 1904, for example, at the Paragon Theatre of Varieties in the Mile End Road in London, the prize was £100, with a silver cup and a gold medal to the best amateurs staying a certain amount of time in the ring with him.

At Hanley, anyone who beat him was offered £100, and anyone whom he did not defeat within 15 minutes received 21 guineas. Tani appeared on the music hall circuit for several years, but allegedly was beaten only once, by a fellow Japanese. He died in 1950.

This is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre.

P.S. If anyone knows of any confirmed footage please be kind enough to share it with us, thank you.
